It varies by global region and time period, by many people argue whether it is rude to place your clutch on the table while you eat. Going back to the 1920s, depending on your status level, you did place your clutch on the table as to show a sign of your wealth. While in the 1950s and early 1960s, it became very rude to have any personal belonging on the table while dining out.

So what do you think? Have you ever come across this situation while dining out with friends and family? Here at Alysse Sterling, we make esquisite bags that glamor and brighten up your outfit, so we highly suggest that you keep you bag on the table! You don’t want to have your clutch sitting on the floor where it could get stepped on, dirty, or even stolen!

Ditto and Co, an event planning company and etiquette consulting firm suggest these tips to keep your bag safe, clean, and sparkling at the dinner table:

1. When dining at a round table, place your clutch on the table behind your water glass and towards the table’s centerpiece. If your clutch is super cute then having it on the table will add to the festivities. If not, well, go buy a new one.

2. When dining at a two-person table, set your clutch off to the side of the table that’s least in the server’s way. When in doubt, set your clutch to the right to ease dish placement.
3. If you really can’t bear the thought of placing your bag on the table, discretely rest it in your lap under the napkin.
